Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered brief, unscheduled remarks at President Donald Trump’s rally in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Tuesday after travelling with him to campaign stops in the state.
Rubio was called on stage by Trump and spoke for only a few seconds. “It’s an honor to work for the greatest country in the world, for the greatest president in the history of the United States of America. We love you, Texas. Thank you,” he told the crowd.
A State Department official said Rubio was travelling in his capacity as national security adviser, explaining that time on the plane gave him an opportunity to discuss a range of issues with the president while Trump was on the move.
The appearance came during Trump’s Texas campaign swing, with Rubio accompanying the president for two stops in the state. The official said the arrangement allowed Rubio to raise national security matters directly with Trump during travel time, rather than requiring a separate meeting while the president’s schedule remained packed.
Rubio’s short turn at the microphone echoed other recent moments at Trump rallies, where prominent Republican figures have been brought on stage for quick comments. On Monday in Mississippi, Trump invited Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith to address the crowd, and she praised him before quickly stepping away.
Trump has indicated that he favours such brief appearances at campaign events. Speaking at the Mississippi rally, he said he liked concise remarks from guests, noting that some speakers otherwise remain at the microphone for 10 minutes.
Rubio’s remarks in Corpus Christi were therefore notable less for their length than for the setting: a senior administration official, travelling with Trump in an advisory capacity, being briefly drawn into the political atmosphere of a campaign rally.
