Caf backs biennial Afcon to protect African players.

Caf had planned to replace Afcon with an African Nations League, but said the new competition would take several years to generate the revenue needed to become self-sufficient.

Caf president Patrice Motsepe said the decision would “advance, protect and promote the interests of African football and the 54 Caf Member Associations, as well as those of African players playing for clubs outside the continent.”

The move is likely to reignite concerns among European clubs, as Afcon tournaments have often been held midway through the European season.

The next Afcon will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in 2027, followed by editions in 2028, 2031 and 2033. There will be no tournament in 2030 because of the World Cup.
