Tyrese Maxey hit two decisive 3-pointers in the final 1 1/2 minutes as the Philadelphia 76ers fought back to defeat the Indiana Pacers 114-109 in Indianapolis on Wednesday night.
Maxey finished with 27 points, and his second late 3-pointer put Philadelphia ahead 112-106 with 46 seconds remaining. The 76ers had needed a fourth-quarter surge after losing control of the game during a difficult third period.
Joel Embiid added 21 points and 11 rebounds for Philadelphia. Jaylen Brown contributed 20 points and 10 boards, Anfernee Simons scored 20 points off the bench, and LeBron James had 13 points and 10 assists. VJ Edgecombe also provided a highlight before the interval, making a half-court shot at the buzzer to give the 76ers a 62-52 halftime lead.
Indiana played without guard Tyrese Haliburton, who was sidelined by a left hamstring strain. Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said he expected Haliburton to miss at least two weeks. Centre Ivica Zubac also sat out a second straight game because of a left ankle sprain.
The Pacers struggled to shoot in the first half, making 39% of their attempts, but transformed the game immediately after halftime. Indiana scored the first 17 points of the third quarter to move in front 69-62, then stretched its lead to 88-75 by the end of the period. Philadelphia made only 5 of 21 shots in the quarter, while Indiana converted 13 of 23.
Andrew Nembhard returned after missing Monday’s loss at Milwaukee with neck soreness and posted 18 points and 14 assists. Pascal Siakam led Indiana with 26 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out with 12 seconds left, while Aaron Nesmith added 18 points.
Philadelphia responded early in the fourth quarter, erasing the deficit as Maxey led the comeback. His layup tied the game at 94, and he then made two free throws to put the 76ers ahead 96-94 with 5:15 remaining. His late shooting sealed the result after Indiana had threatened to take over.
Carlisle said he will miss Friday’s game at Miami to attend the celebration of life service for his father, Preston Carlisle, in Ogdensburg, New York. Assistant coach Lloyd Pierce will serve as head coach. Preston Carlisle died on Oct. 3 at the age of 96.
