Unconventional AI said on Monday it is buying Israeli chip startup NeuReality, a move intended to speed up the US hardware company’s product development less than a year after its launch.
The deal, agreed for an undisclosed amount, will be paid for with a mix of cash and stock. Unconventional AI began operating with a valuation of $4.5 billion, placing it among a group of highly valued young companies seeking to build hardware for artificial intelligence.
NeuReality, based in Israel, develops chip technology, and its acquisition gives Unconventional AI additional expertise as it works to bring its own products forward. The company did not disclose further financial terms of the transaction.
The acquisition underlines the continued demand for specialist semiconductor skills as companies race to build infrastructure for artificial intelligence systems. Hardware has become a crucial part of that contest, with startups and established chipmakers alike trying to improve the speed and efficiency of AI computing.
For Unconventional AI, the purchase brings in a team and technology focused on chips at a time when the company is still in the early stages of building out its business. The company said the transaction is intended to help shorten its product development timeline, though it did not provide details on how NeuReality will be integrated.
The companies did not state when the deal is expected to close or whether NeuReality will continue operating under its own name. No additional terms were announced beyond the cash-and-stock structure and the fact that the purchase price was not disclosed.
