The attackers allegedly gained access through a compromised laptop belonging to a Binance engineer, then used it to submit unauthorised withdrawal requests across 10 blockchains.
Binance said the bulk of the funds left its wallets in a single burst lasting about 20 minutes, triggering a frantic effort by Tether and Circle to freeze stolen assets.
The exchange has suspended withdrawals and deposits, frozen about $3 billion in crypto, and pledged to cover all customer losses.
Security researchers have linked the attack to North Korea’s TraderTraitor hacking unit, though Binance says its investigation has uncovered additional points of breach beyond the engineer’s laptop.
